At Tarwin Lower Primary School, we believe that literacy and the ability to read, write, speak and communicate effectively, is essential for future success. Literacy provides the foundation for learning across all areas of the curriculum and equips students with the skills they need to participate confidently in everyday life.

Literacy is our priority, and fostering a love of reading and writing is at the heart of what we do. Students receive a minimum of 10 hours of dedicated literacy instruction each week, with learning experiences carefully planned to develop strong reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

As a whole school, we are committed to providing a consistent and evidence-based approach to literacy learning. We are currently implementing the Hartley Knows Handwriting program across all year levels, ensuring students develop correct letter formation, pencil grip, posture and handwriting fluency. By using a common approach throughout the school, students build confidence and develop the skills needed to communicate clearly and effectively through writing.

Handwriting is a major focus for all students, as we recognise the important link between strong handwriting skills, written expression and overall literacy achievement. Through explicit teaching and regular practice, students are supported to take pride in their work and develop legible, efficient handwriting.

Literacy is woven into every aspect of school life. Today's students need more than just the ability to read a book or write a sentence. They must be able to think critically, communicate effectively, access information, and engage confidently with the digital world. Our literacy program helps students become capable, curious and informed learners who can adapt to an ever-changing world.
