Mistakes

Reading – Lit Circles, Connector role.

You will need to complete the reading on Key Links here

Once you have logged in, go to the Emerald tab and scroll down to find the 'Moments in time' book. Download it and have a read of each of the short stories.

Today I just want you to read and have a think/discussion with a family member how you connect with each short story. It might be something that you have done or experienced, it might remind you of real world events that have/are happening.

Writing – Persuasive writing (letters)

Last week we had a look at how Ads are persuasive. Well this week we are having a closer look at letters and how people use their language to persuade the person they are writing to.

You will need to complete the reading on Key Links here.

Once you have logged in, go to the Sapphire tab and scroll down to find the 'World without tree's' book. Have a read through that and reflect on the effects of deforestation.

Have a go at the 'Going Solo' activity on the last page of this book and plan out what important points you would like to tell the government (In dot points). Print it out here or draw up the graphic organiser in your book :)

Spelling –

Get a family member to test you on your spelling words from last week (UNIT 12: h,j).

Maths –

All, Mapping: 1. Please complete the next Mental Maths, set a 7 minute timer and correct.

We are learning how to read out coordinates. you find the point first, then to describe where it is, you follow the line down first and call out the letter on the bottom axis first. Then, you go back to the point and follow the line across to the vertical axis and then say the number. (eg. D,4) or (E, 7).

2. Play a game of battleships with a family member here. Make sure you draw your battle ships ON the lines. The 5 ships are:  Carrier (occupies 5 spaces), Battleship (4), Cruiser (3), Submarine (3), and Destroyer (2).

Draw them in one colour and with another colour, mark the co-ordinates that you ask your opponent, so you keep track of what you have said. And be sure to draw an X at any coordinate that is a hit!

Here is a rubric for your letter writing, so have a look through this before our mini lessons and also jot down what persuasive devices you're going to use! You do not have to start writing today, as we will have a mini lesson on your writing today :)

Maths –

All, Mapping: 1. Using this mapping grid, draw a shape (It can be a regular, irregular, or quite a whacky shape).

Rules:

1. This shape must have only straight lines so use your ruler while drawing it.

2. Each corner of the shape MUST touch a point on the mapping grid, because you are going to draw it, then on the second mapping grid that you print out, somebody in your household will try and draw what you have drawn, following ONLY YOUR INSTRUCTIONS.

Maths –

Grade 4, Mapping: 1. Please complete the next Mental Maths, set a 7 minute timer and correct.

2. We are learning about the features of a map.

What is a 'legend'? In maths, it doesn't quite mean you are a super cool individual, but it is usually a box in the corner of a map explaining what the symbols in the map mean. It can also be called a 'key'.

Please fill out the features of this map, you can make it as adventurous as you want! (If you cannot print, you may just edit the word document).

Grade 5 and 6, Mapping: 1. Please complete the next Mental Maths, set a 7 minute timer and correct.

2. Have a look at this map of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. Please see if you can identify the LEGEND, SCALE and MAP TITLE. These are some key features in a map.

Now, in your maths book, please design a lovely day trip to the Botanic Gardens.

On a fresh page, write a title (Could be something like, 'Day trip through the Botanic gardens') and write down the date. Now you will make up a set of at least 10 directions throughout the park from the starting point to the finishing point.

Starting point and End point= The education entrance.

Your list of directions must be specific so I can follow them (Please don't send me on a crazy trail!!).

Use words such as:

turn left at......,

go east on..... path

Follow the path until you get to the....

For bonus points, include the SCALE in your directions (so, how far I would have to walk).
